Senior Careers Consultant Nathan Thompson has recently celebrated seven years at Shirley Parsons.
Nathan, who joined the company in September 2017 as a recruiter, is now a Senior Careers Consultant, specialising in placing Health and Safety professionals in the FM, Property Management and Professional Services sectors.
After received a first-class degree in Business and Management at the University of Portsmouth, his career took him into recruitment and consulting.
Here, Nathan reflects on his seven years at Shirley Parsons:
How would you sum up your seven years at Shirley Parsons?
“I can’t believe it has been 7 years, it seems to have absolutely flown by! It’s been great to progress along with the business.”
What have been your highlights to date?
“There have been some fantastic moments and incentives across the years. The chance to visit Porto, Amsterdam and Hamburg have been particularly memorable.”
What do you enjoy most about being a Careers Consultant?
“It’s a pleasure to get the chance to work with a wide range of clients and candidates. I’ve been on some really interesting site visits which gives great insights into how some iconic organisations work and the impact H&S professionals have on them. I’ve really enjoyed being able to support candidates throughout their careers and help secure their next career move.
What is the most important advice you give to your candidates?
“I would say to continue building your network, attend industry events, connect with people on LinkedIn and take any opportunity to meet new people in the H&S world.”
How has the demand for health and safety professionals changed in recent years, and what do you foresee for the future?
“I think Covid and lockdown made companies really appreciate how essential Health and Safety professionals are and, how much impact and value they can add to the business. The demand for H&S professionals and in particular fire safety professionals has definitely grown over the last couple of years.”
What qualifications or certifications are most valued in the health and safety field?
“A NEBOSH Certificate is still the go to as the minimum requirement, although I have begun to see an increase in the number of HSE apprenticeships being completed. A Diploma/ degree level qualification still seems to be essential in securing a significant step up in salary and responsibilities.”
What are your hobbies outside of work?
“Outside of work you’d likely find me going on long dog walks and, often ending up at the pub.”
Something we may not know about you?
“Seeing as it is nearly Christmas… I once played baby Jesus in the nativity.”
Nathan is an integral member of the Shirley Parsons team and also plays an essential part in ensuring we maintain our corporate social responsibility.
Regularly taking part in volunteering days, company socials and awareness campaigns, he is a great asset to Shirley Parsons.
Congratulations on the seven years Nathan, here’s to the next seven!
