SP Data Centers: Achieving Sustainability & Client Value in Sydney

SP Data Centers helped hyperscale cloud clients achieve ambitious ESG goals by delivering a Sydney data centre with industry-leading energy efficiency, dramatically reduced water use, and long-term cost savings.

Background

Hyperscale cloud providers demanded low PUE, water efficiency, and carbon minimisation to align with their own sustainability commitments. Traditional data centres typically consumed large volumes of water and operated at PUEs above 1.3–1.4.

As part of the client’s sustainability and growth strategy, the project was designed with cutting-edge efficiency and environmental goals, making it one of the most sustainable hyperscale data centres globally. Its design achieves an industry-low Power Usage Effectiveness (PUE) of 1.15 and uses approximately 80% less water than traditional data centres

Implementation

  • Designed for a PUE of 1.15, among the lowest in the industry.
  • Adopted cooling innovations that use ~80% less water than traditional data centres.
  • Built an onsite 132KV substation for energy efficiency.
  • Embedded sustainability into the design under the Planet, People, Progress framework.

Outcome

  • Strong client reception, particularly from hyperscale cloud providers with aggressive ESG targets.
  • Cost efficiencies for clients through connected campuses (reduced infrastructure duplication, lower latency, and operational savings).
  • Enhanced the client’s reputation as a sustainability leader in the hyperscale data centre market.

Sustainability innovations at the project not only reduced environmental impact but also provided measurable cost and performance advantages to hyperscale customers.
