On 22 June, Rethink HSEQ will bring together HSEQ professionals for Rethink: Curiosity – an immersive one-day event exploring the role curiosity plays in better decision-making, stronger leadership, and more effective HSEQ practice.
Hosted by Oliver Sanandres of City of London, the event has been created in response to a challenge many organisations are now facing. In increasingly complex environments shaped by AI, automation, digital systems, and operational pressure, the issue is no longer access to information. The challenge is maintaining the questioning, judgement, and constructive challenge needed to interpret that information well.
Curiosity is often overlooked in HSEQ, yet it sits behind some of the profession’s most important capabilities: recognising weak signals, challenging assumptions, learning effectively from incidents, improving communication, and creating environments where people feel confident to speak up.
Rethink: Curiosity has been designed to explore exactly that.
How curiosity strengthens HSEQ practice.
Throughout the day, attendees will work through practical HSEQ scenarios designed to strengthen how curiosity shows up in everyday decision-making, leadership, communication, and operational performance.
The event will explore how curiosity can help professionals:
- Ask better questions rather than simply accepting outputs
- Recognise subtle shifts and early warning signs
- Challenge assumptions before they become embedded risk
- Improve communication and constructive challenge
- Make stronger decisions under pressure and uncertainty
- Strengthen learning and continuous improvement across teams
Rather than focusing on more process or additional systems, the emphasis is on strengthening the human thinking that underpins effective HSEQ outcomes.
Built around real-world application.
Rethink: Curiosity is intentionally designed to move away from the traditional conference format.
The day combines short learning sprints, facilitated workshops, interactive exercises, and group reflection sessions, creating a highly practical and immersive experience.
Participants will work through realistic HSEQ situations where information is incomplete, assumptions are easy to miss, and decisions carry real consequences.
Sessions throughout the day will explore topics including:
- Curiosity and risk perception
- Psychological safety and constructive challenge
- Curious communication techniques
- Operational decision-making
- Curiosity-led improvement and culture change
Participants will also contribute to a live ‘Curiosity Board’ throughout the event, capturing assumptions to challenge, behaviours to strengthen, ideas for improvement, and personal commitments to take back into the workplace.
Learning beyond the event.
One of the key aims behind Rethink HSEQ is creating learning that continues beyond a single event.
As part of Rethink: Curiosity, attendees will also take part in two facilitated online reflection sessions following the event. These sessions are designed to help participants apply ideas in practice, reflect on real experiences, and continue strengthening how curiosity influences their work overtime.
Each participant will also leave with a practical Curiosity Sprint Plan – a focused action designed to trial a meaningful improvement within their organisation.
Part of the next chapter of Rethink HSEQ.
Rethink: Curiosity forms part of the newly relaunched Rethink HSEQ platform, which has evolved into a professional development community focused on helping HSEQ professionals strengthen the non-technical skills that drive real impact, including leadership, communication, influence, and strategic thinking.
Alongside events, Rethink Membership provides access to ongoing learning, resources, tools, and community support designed to help professionals continue developing beyond individual event experiences.
Members also receive 30% discount and early access to all Rethink events.
