Developing Global HSE Excellence Across Manufacturing Operations

Shirley Parsons partnered with a global manufacturer to enhance HSE standards across multiple sites, streamlining safety practices, strengthening risk management, and promoting a culture of continuous improvement, resulting in safer, more compliant operations worldwide.

Background

A leading global supplier in the print consumables sector sought to enhance Health, Safety, and Environment (HSE) practices across their in-plant ink production facilities spanning multiple international locations. Following an internal safety review, the organisation identified areas for improvement and aimed to implement a structured “Plan, Do, Check, Act” (PDCA) approach.

Their review highlighted potential safety issues within their ink processing systems, which involved both solvent-based and water-based ink production. Recognising the unique risks associated with each process and varying site-specific conditions, they required expert assistance to standardise and improve their Risk Assessment Method Statements (RAMS) and overall HSE practices.

Implementation

Shirley Parsons Consultancy Services was engaged to conduct a comprehensive RAMS review and update across facilities in the USA, South Africa, and Latin America. Key activities included:

Site visits and assessments: Consultants conducted on-site assessments of ink processing systems at multiple production sites across the USA, South Africa, Mexico, and Brazil.

RAMS review and updates: Existing RAMS packs were reviewed to identify gaps and areas for improvement, then updated and standardised to reflect best practices and address site-specific risks.

Risk identification and mitigation: Potential hazards related to solvent-based and water-based ink production were assessed, considering chemical handling, equipment operation, and environmental factors.

Action plan development: Tailored action plans were created for each site, detailing specific recommendations and preventative measures.

Global scope expansion: The initial project scope was extended to include additional Latin American sites, highlighting the confidence in Shirley Parsons’ expertise and project success.

Outcome

Through Shirley Parsons’ expert guidance and intervention, the organisation successfully standardised and enhanced RAMS packs across multiple sites, leading to:

  • Improved risk management with updated and consistent RAMS documentation for all assessed locations.
  • Practical safety improvements customised to each site’s unique challenges.
  • A clear, structured plan driving continuous safety improvements.
  • Expansion of the project to additional international sites, reinforcing the company’s global safety commitment.

This collaboration underscores the value of proactive risk management and continuous improvement. By applying a systematic, data-driven approach, the organisation significantly enhanced workplace safety and compliance, setting a higher standard for operational excellence within their industry.
