Ben Evans, Regional Head of Renewables at SP Clean Energy, shares his expert insights.
In recent years, there has been a surge in demand for qualified Offshore Wind Client Representatives. However, as I’ve observed while working with clients to find Pre-Assembly Quality Client Reps, there’s a concerning trend of candidates presenting themselves without the necessary experience.
Many individuals with as little as 12 months of experience, or even none at all in pre-assembly, are applying for these roles. While some may have worked on one phase of pre-assembly construction, the majority lack the comprehensive understanding required to effectively represent clients in this demanding field.
What does it take to be a successful offshore wind client representative?
Based on my experience as a Client Rep and my current role in recruitment, I’ve identified key qualities that differentiate the best from the rest:
- Extensive Experience: A deep understanding of all phases of Offshore Wind construction is essential.
- Non-Conformance Expertise: Strong knowledge of non-conformance management is crucial for handling quality issues.
- Component Familiarity: A thorough understanding of component storage, on-site maintenance, and preservation requirements is vital.
- Clear Criteria: A clear knowledge of accept/reject criteria and component assembly processes is essential.
- Stakeholder Engagement: The ability to effectively engage with stakeholders and contribute value to the project is paramount.
- Effective Communication: The skill to filter and communicate the right information back to the client is crucial.
- Trust and Support: Knowing how to allow the OEM to do their job while stepping in only when necessary demonstrates trust in their expertise and the ability to support rather than interfere.
Advice for aspiring client representatives.
For those aspiring to become Client Reps in the Offshore Wind industry, my advice is simple:
- Gain Hands-On Experience: Seek opportunities to work in all areas of pre-assembly, including towers, nacelles, snagging, and more.
- Observe and Learn: Join the snagging team, attend walk-downs, and actively listen to discussions between contractors and clients.
- Understand the Process: Learn how components are received, stored, prepared, assembled, and handed over.
- Take Your Time: Avoid rushing the process. Quality over quantity is essential in this field.
