Closing the Skills Gap in the UK Utilities Sector, 2025–2030

UK Utilities Sector

Supporting you by delivering expert talent or take on projects across the energy projects.

The UK utilities sector is under extraordinary pressure. Between 2025 and 2030, demand for electricity is projected to rise by up to 20% as homes and businesses electrify heating, transport, and data-driven industries. At the same time, Net Zero deadlines are driving rapid expansion in offshore wind, solar, nuclear, and battery storage alongside the largest grid upgrade in generations.

But infrastructure ambitions face a human bottleneck. The National Grid ESO has warned that without a skilled workforce turbine technicians, grid engineers, project managers, and high-voltage specialists projects risk delays, spiralling costs, and reduced resilience.

As Ben Evans, Regional Head of Renewables at Shirley Parsons, explains:

“Across offshore wind, grid upgrades, and battery storage, projects are being slowed not by technology or finance, but by the availability of specialist engineers and technicians. Contract staffing is proving critical in bridging these gaps giving employers immediate access to the expertise they need while helping permanent teams build capability for the long term.”

The reality is that the invisible infrastructure, people, is just as vital as the turbines, reactors, and substations shaping the UK’s energy future.

Salary pressures are rising, competition from renewables and transport is intense, and engineers increasingly expect more than pay. Purpose-driven careers, professional development, and employer reputation all play a growing role in attracting and retaining “the doers”  the site managers, systems engineers, and project leaders who will actually deliver Net Zero.
