Securing a SHEQ Manager for an Organisation’s Expansion in Spain

Shirley Parsons successfully placed a SHEQ Manager for a leading waste management company’s expansion in Spain, leveraging strategic market analysis and a tailored recruitment process to deliver a key hire that supports the organisation’s ambitious European growth plans.

Background

A leading provider in the waste management and sustainability sector had been experiencing significant growth across Europe. As part of their expansion, they required a SHEQ Manager to lead operations in Bilbao, Spain – a critical role to ensure their high standards for safety, health, environment, and quality (SHEQ) are upheld as they acquire new businesses.

Having already collaborated successfully with the organisation on three prior placements, their SHEQ Director turned to Mike Roebuck once again to help with their recruitment needs.

Implementation

The recruitment process began with a comprehensive market analysis to understand the Spanish HSEQ landscape, focusing on Bilbao’s talent pool. This initially resulted in 10-12 qualified candidates, from which six were shortlisted for the company’s consideration.

Language proficiency presented an initial hurdle, as fluency in English was essential for the role. Despite these challenges, the high quality of candidates was evident, showcasing the depth of the talent pool in Spain.

After several rounds of interviews, two candidates stood out in the final stage. This is when Shirley Parsons H&S specific personality profiling and aspirations tool (MAPP) was key in helping the company decide who was the best cultural fit and long-term match for their business.

Juanan Fernandez was ultimately selected for his senior-level expertise, proven track record, and strong alignment with the business’s growth objectives in Spain and across Europe.

Outcome

The successful placement of Juanan as the new SHEQ Manager in Bilbao demonstrates the effectiveness of a strategic and thorough recruitment process.

Key results included:

Client satisfaction: The SHEQ Director expressed his satisfaction with the hire, noting that this key role had been vacant for some time without success.

Business growth: Juanan’s expertise aligned perfectly with the organisations ambitious expansion plans in Spain and beyond, positioning the company for continued success in the European market.

Recruitment excellence: This project solidified Shirley Parsons ability to deliver in uncharted markets, with the Spanish search proving smoother than anticipated.
