Attendees to the Beyond HSEQ “The Art of the Pitch” event were encouraged to be less Ferengi and more Jean-Luc Picard in a Star Trek-themed presentation by Kevin Barr.
Kevin, Health & Safety Manager for Telehouse Europe was one of three speakers giving learning “sprints” to over 60 senior HSEQ professionals attending the latest Beyond HSEQ event held at Clancy Group offices in Harefield on Monday 15th July.
All attendees also took part in Round-table sessions to discuss and develop their pitch skills before designing and delivering their pitch for a fictional project to a panel of 5 senior leaders. Feedback for the event was very positive.
Mike Sudds, Environment, Health, Safety, and Sustainability Lead for GE Healthcare said;
“A brilliant day! Loved it! A superb learning experience and great to get in a room with so many peers. I would highly recommend attending future events.”
Beyond HSEQ launched in November 2022 and has produced 5 events attended by more than 200 leaders who want to learn, grow, and think differently about HSEQ. Created by Shirley Parsons, Beyond HSEQ has a steering committee of HSEQ Directors and holds events hosted by members.
The latest event hosted by James Hiom from Clancy, was designed to give attendees a better understanding of sales techniques and covered topics such as alignment strategies, empathy, decision-making, stakeholder mapping, pitch design, and pitch delivery.
Janine Williams Ward, Global Safety Management System Implementation at Amazon said:
“I had a fantastic time at Beyond HSEQs ‘The Art of the Pitch’ workshop. The objective was to learn how to apply modern sales techniques to HSE-related pitches in the C-suite. From the value of the “no” and a thought-provoking question on Ferengi v Picard philsophy…to stakeholder analysis. I left with a couple of extra tools on my belt.”
The event ended with a fun express pitch exercise to a panel of fictional Board directors where all teams had 2 minutes each to win the Board’s backing for their project. Four of the seven teams won the funding using skills they learned during the day.
Catriona Large, Quality and HSE Advisor for Veridien said “I really enjoyed the event, I am not a born presenter by any means and it is something I am trying to get better at, so it was perfect to push me outside of my comfort zone.”
Jordan Harlow, Organisational Psychology Consultant for Shirley Parsons, content manager for the event and one of the “sprint” coaches said:
“I was so impressed by the excitement and energy of the attendees at this event. Many approached me at the end to say how much they enjoyed it and I have been asked to deliver a bespoke version of the workshop for the HSEQ team of one of the attendees.”
