Enhancing Electrical Safety in a Technology High-Power Lab

Our client, a global leader in technology innovation, operates advanced hardware laboratories across its Texas campuses. As our client scales its infrastructure to support next-generation computer workloads, the complexity and risk profile of its labs are evolving rapidly.

Background

Our client’s labs are transitioning to support significantly higher power densities, scaling from 135 kW to over 800 kW per rack. With the introduction of advanced systems such as Direct Liquid Cooling (DLC), HVDC busbars, and Power Capacitance Shelves, the company recognized the need to proactively manage electrical safety risks.

While our client’s internal teams include highly skilled engineers, leadership identified a gap in consistent electrical hazard awareness, safe work practices, and PPE usage across its lab environments. Our client sought a third-party partner to assess up to 20 high-risk labs and provide a roadmap for scalable, standard-aligned safety improvements.

Implementation

Shirley Parsons delivered a comprehensive Safety Gap Assessment tailored to their operational realities. The project included:

  • Pre-Assessment Planning:
Coordination with key stakeholders, document review, and development of a site-specific agenda.
  • Onsite Assessment:
Over three days, two Shirley Parsons assessors visited 20 labs, conducted walkthroughs, interviewed staff, and reviewed safety documentation.
  • Gap Identification:
Findings were benchmarked against federal, state, and local regulations, as well as industry best practices in data center safety.
  • Reporting & Recommendations:
A detailed report outlined lab-specific findings, corrective actions, and strategic recommendations.

Outcome

Our client received a clear, actionable roadmap to enhance electrical safety across its lab environments. The assessment helped:

  • Strengthening compliance with evolving safety standards
  • Improve hazard awareness and PPE protocols
  • Support operational resilience as infrastructure scales
  • Align executive stakeholders on safety priorities

With deep expertise in EHS consulting and a track record of supporting high-tech clients, Shirley Parsons brings scalable, practical solutions to complex safety challenges. Our tailored assessments help organizations proactively manage risk and build safety systems that evolve with innovation.
