Turning Numbers into Action: Making Data Attractive
Over 100 HSEQ professionals gathered last month for the seventh Rethink HSEQ event, hosted at the Heathrow Learning and Skills Academy.
This time around the focus was on ‘making data attractive, and more importantly, making it meaningful.’ From insightful keynotes to hands-on workshops, the day was a masterclass in transforming raw information into stories that change mindsets and behaviours.
Hosted by Amanda Owen MBE, Heathrow’s Director of Wellbeing, Health, and Safety, the event unpacked how the “What”, “So What”, and “Now What” of data can inspire impactful action across organisations.
“This is about taking data and turning it into stories. It’s not the ‘what’ that we need to think about, it’s the ‘So what’ and the ‘Now what’.”
Key takeaways from the day.
- From data to decision-making
Peter Jenkins opened the day with a deep dive into the data lifecycle – exploring how AI, strategy, and clarity drive excellence. His memorable C|TQQCCC framework offered a practical lens for identifying, collecting, and interpreting meaningful data.
- Insight that drives action
Kirsty Weir of Safe365 introduced a powerful model that aligns data with insight and action, urging attendees to extract value through meaningful interpretation. Her sessions challenged participants to go beyond the numbers and use data as a tool for influence.
“Data alone has limited value and influence. It’s the insights and resulting actions that we’re seeking.”
- Storytelling that changes behaviour
Pete Ashcroft of Media Zoo closed the event by showing how behavioural science and emotional storytelling can make messages memorable. His one-minute message challenge got teams on their feet, crafting scripts and performing with passion and purpose.
“Our decisions are driven by emotion and experience… not data.”
