Occupational Health and Risk Management for a Pharmaceutical Manufacturer

A pharmaceutical manufacturer focused on improving medication supply reliability and patient access required specialist support to better understand and manage occupational health risks within its manufacturing operations. The facility handled potent active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs), disinfectants and industrial processes that required careful management of employee exposure and workplace safety risks.

Background

As operations expanded, the organisation sought a clearer understanding of workplace health risks and opportunities to further strengthen employee protection and regulatory alignment.

The facility’s manufacturing activities involved potential exposure to hazardous substances, alongside physically demanding tasks that could contribute to musculoskeletal injuries. To support long-term operational excellence, the organisation required a structured assessment of industrial hygiene and ergonomic risks, together with a practical roadmap for ongoing monitoring and risk reduction.

Implementation

Shirley Parsons conducted a comprehensive qualitative industrial hygiene assessment across the facility, including site walkthroughs, employee discussions and detailed reviews of operational processes.

The assessment identified potential exposure pathways and highlighted high-priority substances requiring ongoing monitoring and effective control measures. Findings were evaluated based on potential risk and regulatory impact, enabling the development of a strategic industrial hygiene sampling plan to guide future exposure monitoring activities.

Alongside the industrial hygiene review, our consultants completed a focused ergonomic assessment of aseptic cleaning operations. The evaluation examined repetitive tasks, work performed above shoulder height and manual handling activities involving loads of up to 30 pounds.

Using a risk-based approach, Shirley Parsons identified key ergonomic stressors and prioritised activities with the greatest potential to contribute to musculoskeletal injuries affecting the shoulders, back, neck and wrists.

Outcome

The combined assessments provided the client with a clear understanding of occupational health risks across its facility and a practical framework for continuous improvement.

Key outcomes included:

  • Identification and prioritisation of industrial hygiene risks and potential exposure pathways
  • Development of a strategic industrial hygiene sampling plan to support ongoing monitoring efforts
  • Identification of high-risk ergonomic tasks and associated musculoskeletal risk factors
  • Practical recommendations to strengthen control measures and reduce employee exposure risks
  • Enhanced alignment with occupational health and safety requirements and industry best practices
  • Support for a more proactive and data-driven approach to workplace health and safety management

By providing expert industrial hygiene and ergonomic consultancy, Shirley Parsons helped the client strengthen employee protection, reduce the likelihood of workplace injury and support safer, more efficient operations across the facility.
