A leading Fortune 200 transportation union is searching for a Chief of Safety Officer, tasked with developing high-quality strategies and plans ensuring the continuance of Safety excellence. The incumbent will be responsible for the direction of all safety matters in accordance with corporate standards. Due to the importance and high visibility of this role, this position has reporting responsibility to the Chief Operating Officer.
 

The Role:

  • Provide leadership to develop an OSH Management, implementing said SMS, and the continuous improvement of the SMS
  • Create and drive a safety culture by effectively communicating an enhanced safety vision, accountability, and metrics across the organization to ensure meaningful improvement on safety performance, culture, claims, and insurance expenses
  • Develop and oversee the execution of a comprehensive safety training program
  • Influences and coaches company leadership on execution of robust safety and health action plans to improve safety and fosters full employee engagement
  • Build and develop high energy, talented team while encouraging open employee communication and engagement via development, training, and performance management

 

The Candidate:

 

  • 20+ years of experience in managing and leading people with a proven track record of success in safety performance and culture change
  • 20+ years of first-hand experience utilizing recognized Hazard Identification and Analysis methodologies (e.g., FMEA, What-if, Fishbone, Bow-Tie, JSA/JHA, etc.)
  • 20+ years of experience progressively responsible experience in directing or managing safety processes
  • 20+ years of experience directly liaising with federal regulatory entities
  • First-hand experience developing safety strategy, control procedures, and direct/support auditing processes to ensure strategy builds a culture of “safety is a value” with our employees and the communities in which we operate
  • 10+ years of experience in executive Safety leadership at a regional or national level
  • Experiencing managing Safety in a unionized environment
  • First-hand experience in developing, implementing, and managing safety and health performance under a formal Safety Management System (e.g., ANSI Z-10, ISO 18001/45001, Process Safety Management/Risk Management Plan, etc.)
  • A track record of bringing safety to a higher level within organizations and executive leadership capabilities
  • Excellent communicator and relationship builder and are skilled at managing multiple stakeholders, leading teams, and adapting to change
  • Demonstrate organizational agility and ability to collaborate and influence across functional areas and business units and effectively work within new structures, processes, requirements, and cultures
  • A credible thought leader experienced at engaging with and speaking to key internal and external stakeholders, including Board members, customers, investors and government bodies, initiatives, and industry forums
  • Serve as a safety role model and drive the culture change with leadership through their team
  • Ability to travel 50% of the time
  • Certified Safety Professional (CSP) or Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Safety, or a related field from an accredited program
