The first Health, Safety and FM Golf Championship has teed off!

  • Publish Date: Posted over 4 years ago

The first event of the new series, presented by Shirley Parsons & The Facilities Show, in association with SHP Online, FMJ and Safety & Health Expo, was held at the immaculate Centurion Club in Hertfordshire on 9th May 2019. Over 50 golfers from the industry took part, and despite the challenging weather conditions, was a day enjoyed by all.

Sponsored by THSP Risk Management and organised by Will Roebuck Golf, along with a great 18 holes on one of the best new courses in the UK, attendees were able to make the most of the facilities, enjoy a warm up on the driving range and were treated to a much-needed BBQ afterwards. Some great prizes, including items from luxury golf and lifestyle brands GFORE and Peter Millar, were awarded to the top individual, team, nearest to the pin and longest drive winners. A quick mid-round gin, supplied by Jim and Tonic, certainly helped to make the weather conditions that little more bearable!

The Winners

The winner for the day was John Balague, from GFG Gas Detection, with a very creditable 38 Stableford points. Playing off a handicap of three, he even bogeyed his final hole on his way to victory!

That left a very slender one-point advantage from Tony Allen, who scored 37 points off a handicap of 14.

The winning team was a quartet from PRS Jobs, scoring a combined 83 points, giving them a very narrow one-point victory over a team made up of Mike Roebuck (Shirley Parsons), John Balague (GFG Gas), David Blood (Love Your Workspace) and John Thoday (THSP Risk Management).

The longest drive was on the par 5 18th hole, where a beautiful strike from Elmstone’s Joanne Price was victorious.

Jack Yarrow, from Grundon Waste Management, secured the nearest to the pin prize with a shot to within 3 feet of the hole on the tricky 159-year par 3 fifth hole.

The Venue

Centurion Club is widely regarded as one of the best new courses in the UK. It’s been open for play since 2013 and is located in St Albans. Despite the treacherous weather, the course was in immaculate condition and a joy to play on.

The rivalry isn’t finished yet, with both the winning individual, team and runners-up taking part in a virtual golf challenge at June’s Facilities Show, which runs in conjunction with the Safety & Health Expo, from 18th – 20th June at London’s Excel. Pop along to Stand FM6630 if you fancy taking them on! Shirley Parsons will be exhibiting next door, on Stand SH1840.

Our Next Event

The next event in the series takes place on 11th September at Hollinwell Golf Club in Nottingham. Ranked 36th best course in the UK and the venue for The Open Championship final qualifier for the next four years, this is another first-class day of golf. We’ll also be joined by the fabulous Geoff Swain, World Champion trick-shot extraordinaire.
