In recognition of World Quality Day, we're excited to launch our new tool.

  • Publish Date: Posted over 2 years ago

The Quality in Construction Design Best Practice Tool, approved by global quality groups, including our friends at CQI, is designed to significantly reduce the risks in the early stages of a project.

What is World Quality Day?

There is an ever-increasing demand in customer expectations, competition, and technological change; World Quality Day is designed to bring awareness to the quality management profession's vital contributions to these ever-increasing demands that affect organisational and national growth and prosperity. The Chartered Quality Institute focus for 2021 is Sustainability - supporting the path to Net Zero Carbon. This tool fully supports this focus by helping to minimise waste in both the design process and the subsequent construction phase. What’s more, the implementation cost is likely to be less than £2000 per project.

How does our tool contribute?

Our tool is designed to be introduced in the early stages: the Concept Design and Developed Design stages. It uses minimal resources but ensures that defects, leading to an increase in the cost of delivery, reduced productivity, and increased risk in health and safety; are reduced.

Enables clients and project teams to measure better, control and monitor the quality of design in the early project stages - leading to significant cost avoidance, timely delivery, and enhanced reputations, all critical to overall project success.

How does it work?

The tool is a subjective evaluation of a project through two design stages – concept design and developed design.

In the concept’s evaluation stage, a self-assessment is designed to evaluate the confidence and maturity of a project under the best-practice principles through a specific stage of the client project process.

The developed design stage evaluates the more detailed cost and schedule used to seek approval for the funding of the entire project.

The tool would be implemented three times during each phase. Shortly after the start, between 30-50%, they were between 80%-90% of the way through the stage. During these sessions, the team evaluated the progress against a set of criteria on a score from 0-5. The output is a quality score measured in per cent, and a list of risk areas open on the project are revealed for the team to better measure and then better control and monitor the quality of the project.

Contributors

The original project evaluation tool was commissioned by Heathrow and led by Helen Soulou with much input from Arup, Atkins and Jacobs in 2015/16.

The subsequent development of the tool was undertaken in 2021 by our Senior Associate at Shirley Parsons Project Services, David Myers, and other leading quality experts from America, Australia, Canada & the UK.
