"A Career in CDM” – focussing on the role of CDM Advisor and Principal Designer and how you develop a career in this area.

On the 29th of June, 2021, we were joined by Gleeds.

Speakers were:

Ed Wilson - Associate Director - discussed what transferable skills he looks for in candidates, background and experience he wants candidates to have, what types of candidates are attractive when recruiting in this area.

Aled Phillips - Graduate CDM Consultant - discussed what it is like looking from a candidates perspective. What are the good things about a career in CDM, the challenges, how you can develop your career, and why it is a good career option?

Here is what Ed and Aled had to say:
  • Be critical; look at your transferable skills and how they would benefit you in a CDM role. Softer skills development is key to building relationships. The technical side can be taught but developing these skills is essential.

  • Be committed to developing your skills further by taking opportunities and getting experiences through placements, networking and mentoring is invaluable.

  • Be attentive to the clients’ requirements in conjunction with the health and safety regulations.

  • Be confidently and personably with clients and build a supportive association.

  • Be organised.

  • Be not afraid to ask questions.

  • Be perceptive, consider other aspects such as cost and logistics when considering an approach.

  • Be patient with clients when it comes to their understanding of health and safety. It’s vital to be considerate.

  • Being technically minded of the aspects of construction is essential.

  • Being invested in other areas of Health and Safety ‘adds more strings to your bow’.

  • Being knowledgeable in design is a very favourable ability among employers.

  • Being educated, having a degree or NVQ in Health and Safety or NEBOSH Diploma or NEBOSH General Certificate/ Construction Certificate is a great starting point. Acknowledges your understanding of health and safety regulations and how to apply yourself to the role.
