The HSE reports that 234 major injuries and 15 deaths resulted from carbon monoxide poisoning in 2009. Its advice to students was simple: if you live in rented accommodation, your landlord must have all included gas appliances regularly maintained by a Gas Safe Register engineer and issue you with a copy of the gas safety certificate.
